Q. I am 55 years old and saw traces of blood in my stool on two occasions.I read that I need to do a regular screening test for colorectal cancer. I heard about the Fecal Occult Blood Test, that can be done at home. I would like more information about it.
A. A Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) is an at-home test that detects hidden blood in your stool. It requires 3 small stool samples and is recommended yearly for people beginning at age 50. If a positive FOBT is found, your doctor will determine the source of the bleeding by doing a colonoscopy or an examination.
